Mesa has published numerous scientific articles in Revista de Medicina Tropical, Revista de Biología (University of Havana), Cuadernos de Información Científica, and Actualidades de la Información Científica. He has lectured on scientific topics and literary matters at many national and international meetings in Cuba and the United States. In 1998 he gave the keynote address at the annual meeting of the Southwest Council of Latin American Studies held in Havana.
