James Hoggard

Professor Hoggard, the able translator of Mesa's work, is himself a poet, as well as a novelist, essayist, and playwright. He is the author of ten books)most recently Riding The Wind & Other Tales (Texas A&M UP, 1997). His other books include two novels, four collections of poems, and three previous collections of translations of poems by the internationally noted poet, Oscar Hahn (Chile) and the prize-winning Chicano poet, Tino Villanueva.His writings have produced a series of distinguished awards and honors including awards for creative writing, poetry, and the short story. He has produced several hundred poems, stories, essays, and translations in magazines, journals, and anthologies.In 1999 the Texas Institute of Letters named him co-winner of the Soeurette Diehl Fraser Translation Award for Alone Against the Sea. He holds the McMurtry Distinguished Professorship of English at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.
